Discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham while exploring South America, Machu Picchu is divided into 2 main areas: The agricultural zone and the urban zone. The urban zone has many important structures such as the Sun Temple, the Temple of the Three Windows, and the Intihuatana Stone just to name a few. The agricultural zone has extensive cultivation terracing for farming.
There are many different ecosystems inside the Machu Picchu Sanctuary as it is sandwiched between the Andean Highlands and the Amazon Rainforest. Among these, the most ecologically important are the high Andean grasslands, small height forests, the high jungle including cloud forest and mountain brow.
